EXTRAMURAL PROGRAMME

Attached to this newsletter is a copy of the extramural programme for the period 19 July to 13 August 2010. There will be no extra- murals in the last week of this term due to Book Week and the possible top soiling of our fields for spring. The emphasis is on athletics training and children in Grades 3-7 are expected to attend house practices for training and selection purposes. This is in preparation for our Inter-house Sports Days, which takes place next term. Dates to diarize are:

·         Friday 10 September: Inter-house field events during school time

·         Saturday 11 September: JP and SP Inter-house Athletics in the morning

LEARNING AN INSTRUMENT

Please note that if your son or daughter is learning an instrument, it is imperative to have an instrument to practise on at home. Pupils cannot make progress if they are not able to practise between lessons leading to a frustrated pupil as well as a frustrated teacher! Purchasing an instrument like a piano can be expensive so hiring an instrument is a good alternative. Because music companies don’t, as a rule hire out drum kits, an alternative, initially for drumming, would be a set of practice pads.  I have directed Music staff to allow a leeway of a month in this regard for parents to make arrangements in acquiring an instrument. A hiring list is available next to the Music Department notice board for your convenience.

CHAIN OF VALUES

TEAMWORK – Encouraging team mates at work and sport

Teamwork is all about working together as ONE team. If you argue a lot when you are in a team you will have problems just like France did in the World Cup because they did not work together as a team. When you’re in a team for a project for instance, you have to work together to choose who is in charge of everything. For your information when you grow up you have to work in a team most of the time.

Shivali Chanderpaul

If you have to do a project with a friend, choose wisely, choose a person who you know is going to co-operate with you. Before you do anything silly with your partner like giggling, your mind won’t work properly, you’ll just have silly visions. Try to encourage your partner by telling them “this is easy, this is fun”.

I love hockey, softball and netball – you can’t think negatively, you need to pass wisely, don’t cheat and tell your team you can do this, even try saying a prayer. Understand there is not only one player who is better than you; understand there is a team that needs everyone.

Tayla Mocke

Work as a team, encourage others. If you’re playing in a soccer team and your mate misses the shot, don’t boo him!  Encourage your team mates, cheer them on, and get them in the game.

Stuart Kieser

Teamwork is working together and having confidence in yourself and your mates. Encourage your team in work and sports. Never focus on one team mate, but on everyone in the team. Never give up on your team or yourself. Love and care for your team in everything they do, even if they win or lose.

Kelsey Mocke

You need a team because you cannot do everything by yourself.

Jenny Li

Never say, “I am the best”. Teamwork is about the whole team, not only about you.

Sanele Mkhungo

Teamwork is very important when you’re older because you need teamwork to get a good job. If you think someone’s the best at soccer he really isn’t, it is everyone that helps to make him look good.

Ryan Crewe-Brown

When you play soccer and the striker shoots but the ball hits the post or the cross bar you don’t say, “You suck”. Rather say, “Better luck next time”.

Dylan Longo

One person is not a team, 11 players make up a soccer team. Everyone does the work in a team to make a player look good when he scores a goal.

Gary De Klerk

What I think is if you don’t work as a team nothing can work out to be right, but if you work as a team everything goes according to plan. That’s why often when you don’t work as a team, you end up fighting.
